Cleanliness is next to godliness, but unfortunately for your health, there is no cleaner that what we can find in our homes. Foul air, foul water and foul moisture is on the threshold of our homes and it is a small step from that to an infestation of filthy air-borne contaminants. Of the top 50 substances that cause cancer, 28 are linked to inhaling air pollution. These are chemicals that are in our homes, in the environment and in the air.
For example, a common household bug zapper operates on the same principle of electrified air, with a pair of contacts mounted above the device and two electrodes, which create an arc that zaps pesky insect pests. The arc, in this case, is actually an electric current that can come in contact with the animal and cause direct damage to the nervous system, which is what causes the bug zapper to work.
Another kind of appliance that can pollute the air is the hair dryer. They are very convenient appliances, but they can easily use up a lot of energy. An average electric dryer uses enough electricity to power two 100-watt light bulbs for eight hours.
Other common home appliances like the vacuum cleaner can also pollute the air with small amounts of dust. It is estimated that about 25,000 tons of house dust enter the air every year, the dust that you see on the top of kitchen counter. But the dust that makes its way into our homes comes in several forms, not just in the household dust. It can be in the air as well. As air passes through a dirty vent, it picks up pollen and other airborne contaminants. Also, dirt from our pets or pets hair can end up in the air. If it doesn’t get picked up by the air, it is going to get on the furniture and the flooring.
